The Silhouette
Two lines that rise without meeting, and yet the body is there. Pierre Le Caër's Silhouette needs no volume to exist: it is line, space, suggestion. Worked from a single length of twisted steel wire, the sculpture stands on a base of dark varnished wood that gives it a noble, almost museum like footing, in contrast with the airy lightness of the form. The two steel lines drawing the contour of a woman's body are welded at the base and then free in space, never closed, always potentially in movement. It is the lightest sculpture that can be made in metal, and perhaps the hardest: to hold everything in space with the least possible matter.
