About the work

For a long time Pierre Le Caër called this sculpture The Fury of the Wave, then he looked at it for an hour and changed his mind. What it expresses is not fury but the undertow: the ocean's movement of return after the impact, the wave withdrawing, carrying pebbles away and leaving foam behind. The metal is worked into the shape of a flow, a mass that stretches then folds back, held taut over a piece of Breton granite that stands for the immovable rock. The dark patina of the metal contrasts with the pale stone, like the distinction between moving water and resisting earth. Undertow: a word that says everything about Brittany's relationship with the sea.
